Croatia Road Trip 2026: Split to Dubrovnik in 5 Days Along the Dalmatian Coast

Why this is one of Europe's greatest drives

The Dalmatian Magistrala (road D8) is 350 km of limestone cliffs, turquoise coves, red-roofed fishing villages, and the Adriatic stretching to the horizon. It's not the fastest route from Split to Dubrovnik — but speed isn't the point. With 5 days and a rental car, you transform a 3.5-hour drive into one of the most memorable holidays you can have in Europe.

Croatia uses the euro (since January 2023), so no currency confusion. Card payments are accepted everywhere.

Day 1: Split — Roman palace, waterfront, food

Driving: 0 km (pick up car, explore the city)

Pick up your rental car at Split airport. First stop: Diocletian's Palace — not a museum behind ropes, but an actual living city inside a 4th-century Roman emperor's retirement home. People live, eat, and shop INSIDE the palace walls.

Walk through the underground halls (€8, Game of Thrones filming location), climb the cathedral bell tower (best Split views, €7), and lose yourself in the narrow streets. Evening: the Riva waterfront promenade — where locals spend hours over a single coffee.

Dinner: peka (meat or octopus slow-cooked under an iron bell) at Konoba Fetivi. Full meal: €15-20.

Day 2: Split → Omiš → Brela → Makarska (90 km)

Driving: 2 hours with stops

Omiš (30 km) — medieval pirate town at the mouth of the Cetina canyon. If you want adrenaline, Cetina River rafting (3 hours, €35-45) is one of Croatia's best outdoor experiences.

Brela (60 km) — Punta Rata beach, repeatedly voted Croatia's most beautiful: fine pebbles, pine shade, and an iconic rock formation in turquoise water. Stop here for 2-3 hours.

Makarska (90 km) — your evening base. The Makarska Riviera sits between the Adriatic and the Biokovo mountains (1,762 m) — the backdrop is dramatic. Stroll the palm-lined promenade, eat seafood on the harbour.

Accommodation: Makarska or Brela, from €55/night.

Day 3: Makarska → Biokovo Skywalk → Pelješac Peninsula (120 km)

Driving: 2.5 hours with stops

Biokovo Skywalk (20 km from Makarska) — glass viewing platform at 1,228 m with 60 km of coastline visible below. Entry: €6 + parking €8. Go early morning — queues form from 10:00.

Pelješac Peninsula — Croatia's best-kept secret. Stop at:

Ston — the second-longest defensive wall in the world (after the Great Wall of China), 5.5 km across hills. Walk the walls (€12) and then descend for fresh oysters directly from the producer — 12 oysters + a glass of Plavac Mali wine: €15. This is genuinely one of the best food experiences in Croatia.

Dingač wine region — Croatia's finest red wine. Many cellars offer tastings (€10-15, 3-5 wines).

Accommodation: Ston or Orebić, from €50/night.

Day 4: Pelješac → Trsteno → Dubrovnik (70 km)

Driving: 1.5 hours

Trsteno Arboretum (20 km north of Dubrovnik) — Renaissance botanical garden (1502) with 500-year-old plane trees and the Neptune fountain — another Game of Thrones filming location (King's Landing gardens). Entry: €7. A perfect 1-hour stop.

Dubrovnik — arrival. Park at Ilijaš garage (near the cable car, €4/hour or €30/day — no cars in the Old Town). Take the cable car up Mount Srđ (€27 return) for your first aerial view of the city. The sunset from up here is staggering.

Accommodation: Dubrovnik, 2 nights, from €70/night. Stay in Ploče (5 minutes from Old Town, sea views) or Lapad (beach area, 15 minutes by bus).

Day 5: Dubrovnik — walls, GoT, island

Full day in Dubrovnik. The suggested schedule:

8:00 — City walls (€35). Go at opening — by 10:00 it's packed and brutally hot. The complete circuit: 1.5-2 hours, 1,940 metres of medieval fortification above the sea.

10:30 — Game of Thrones walking tour (2 hours, from €25). Filming locations with side-by-side scene comparisons, even if you haven't watched the show.

13:00 — Lunch at Pizzeria Tabasco (locals' favourite, pizza from €7) or Proto (fine dining, fish, €30/person).

14:30 — Ferry to Lokrum Island (€15 return, 15 minutes). Iron Throne replica (donated by HBO), botanical garden, "Dead Sea" (salt lake for swimming), and rocky beaches with crystal water.

18:00 — Buža Bar (cliff-edge platform outside the walls). Beer with the best view in Dubrovnik.

Budget — 5 days, 2 people

Car rental tips

Choose full insurance (CDW + TP + Super CDW). Croatian coastal roads have tight curves and occasional loose gravel. A scratch on the door costs €200-500 without insurance. With Super CDW (€5-10/day extra), excess is zero. Compare prices on DiscoverCars.

Photograph the car at pickup. Every scratch, every side, including roof and wheels. Email the photos to yourself as timestamped proof.

Diesel or hybrid. Fuel costs €1.40-1.50/litre. On 350 km with a small diesel: ~25 litres = ~€37.

One-way fee. Pick up in Split, drop off in Dubrovnik: €30-80 extra. Worth it — saves a day of driving back and fuel.

Don't park in Dubrovnik Old Town. It's pedestrianised. Ilijaš garage (near cable car) or Pile Gate parking (€7/hour) are your options. Both are walking distance from the Old Town gates.
